I was riding in a taxi in Manhattan one day on my way to a shoot with an assistant. We were talking about what plans we had for the weekend and she mentioned that she was going to a tattoo convention in New Jersey. That was a quite an uncommon event at that time, back in 1992. I instantly turned, looked at her and asked some more questions.
That weekend I too ended up going to the tattoo convention set up a studio space and photographed some of the people attending that day.
I had spoken with the Sunday supplement of a newspaper in Spain that had indicated an interest in publishing the project, however when they saw the work they changed their mind indicating that the images were “too strong” for their readers. So the work did not see the light for many years until a Barcelona art collector saw them and decided to exhibit the work in large format at the Metronom gallery in Barcelona and which ended up having quite a turn out.
